Do you think this modernised teaching, group works, pair works are better than the old ways ?

i guess these group and pair works just make your classroom noisy, kids have a chance to talk and shout. Should we come back to frontal hours, when a teacher is dominant?Do you think this modernised teaching, group works, pair works are better than the old ways ?
okay, how about i give you the point of view from the student:

i HATE pair work or group works, i prefer to sit in front of a book and learn, pair work is only good in classes like science, technology based subjects and having an oral practice in a language class.

sometimes they do help, like they bring ideas together, such as in subjects like english lit. but then, these things should be done as a class or bringing everyone's ideas together as a pleanery.

in my own experience, i have found that generally, people only like working in groups because they don't like to work for themselves - more people equals less work. although i find it i vital in some parts of education, other parts i think the traditional ways are much better.Do you think this modernised teaching, group works, pair works are better than the old ways ?
The problem with group or pairs work is that sometimes one person does all the work. Sometimes one or more students are so lazy that they rely on others doing all the work.

At least if work is an individual process, at least everyone needs to do some of the work!!

I'm a teacher at a Sixth Form College and quite a few GCSE retake students rely on others doing most of the work!! Hoping to learn by osmosis, rather like a sponge (doing very little note taking)
Yes. Kids learn more that way
I don't think they do learn in a noisy environment but they do need to reflect on what they have learnt with some one else, so silence isn't ideal either. I would also like to know the answer.
Darn I despise that !!! Really. Group work, pairs, and noise. I saw a place, or actually pictures and illustrations of a place in Australia.....great idea, and...actually used !! I think it was 19th century ? Well, anyway, those stodgy and learned English people sent people to Australia, and TAUGHT THEM a lesson or three. Made them wear black hoods with eye holes, no, and I mean NO TALKING !, and made them stand up in separate private solid wooden booths to look forward...now there you have a solution....and quiet ? man oh man......bliss for a teacher......why would a teacher even WANT to give kids a chance to talk and shout anyway ?
You have to have a ';Happy median';. You know who are friends and if friends sit together, they talk and such. You need to make the groups and partners, NOT the kids. You have to balance groups and alike with some straight lecture. last time I checked, you are the one with the knowledge, not the student.
One thing I do know. There is no better way of learning tables than by rote.
Yes, it's much better than the old days. When i split students into groups, they get given a task to discuss or complete, with the info discussed being fed back to the group as a whole. This makes the students do what their asked, rather than using it as a shouting session. If you have a good and reasonable, though proffessional relationship with the students, negative aspects rarely occur.

Going back to archaic domination ensures those who might have been encouraged to participate before, would turn their heads and reject everything that then came out of the teachers mouth.

The classroom isn't silent, but there would be chatting. It's the teachers job to ';control'; also, so as soon as it started getting lively, you'd ask them to lower the level
I wholly support the notion that children learn better through enjoyable activities... anything else is called training! And what other mammals train their young?

My two oldest children were educated in the 1970s (Primary) and I chose a (State) school that was keen on the new Progressive method. My son is a PhD, university lecturer and internationally reknowned scientist. My daughter is the Financial Controller of one of the largest airlines.

What is more, they know their tables, they read for pleasure, they can write to high academic and business standards.

Just shows how much can be achieved if you're motivated... children and students who enjoy what they are doing will learn faster and be eager to learn more.

It's authoritarian teachers, who are, basically, afraid of the students, that put them off learning!
The premise is, is that children learn better when they are having fun, and that they do not feel pressured to learn.

The cruel thing is of course that they then start having to much fun to be bothered to learn.

My sister is 7years younger than me and she was taught under ';modernised teaching methods';, and that was in the 1960's. She ended up with many of her friends having to have private tuition just to catch up.

I however, had a very formal education. I didn't always enjoy my class, but I have a very good level of education.

These crazy methods didn't work back then, why oh why do education chiefs keep going back to them.
