My friend received a check in the mail today from the American Public Works Association...could this be legal?

Hi all, my friend received a check in the mail today, addressed to her and she said it's a real check. The amount is for $4,500. She is planning on cashing it and using it towards getting a new car. I am just wondering could this be legitimate? She's never heard of them, and neither have I, and she has no idea why they'd be sending her a check, but she still plans to cash it.My friend received a check in the mail today from the American Public Works Association...could this be legal?
your friend is borderline ';village idiot';. Why would someone send her money out of the blue? I can't explain why but please keep us posted, this will get good at some point in the futureMy friend received a check in the mail today from the American Public Works Association...could this be legal?
hmm, It seems awesome. But it is most likely fake ans is probably some sort of illegal spam thing. I wouldn't do it. Be safe, and don't do it. She should defiantly take it to the police.
Before cashing the check have her take it to her bank and check and see if there are funds available for it and the validity of it.

If it is a valid check have her open a savings account with only this check as a deposit and a $1.00 then wait the 10 business days to see if they take the money back out of the account. If after the ten days it is still there go ahead and spend it
She better look for any fine print. Many checks that look legit are really sleazy marketing schemes to get you into buying something. Look for small wording either on the check's front or in the paperwork that came with that check that says something like ';Cashing this check automatically enrolls you into our _ _ _ Program. This costs $15 a month for a required 38 months...etc';

I have never heard of the American Public Works Association but after googling that term found the enclosed website. Perhaps this check your friend received is a fake/counterfeit check to make people think it's from the APWA.

If I were your friend I'd be contacting the APWA right away to make sure this is a legit check. Even if it's counterfeit she could be held liable by the bank for knowingly cashing it.
