Can someone explain to me how this Freudian thing works?

A Freudian defense mechanism it is -- sublimination-- doing things to let out anxiety. But I dont understand how it works. And does it work when no one will ever see those works done through sublimination? Can someone explain to me how this Freudian thing works?
The idea is that negative psychic energy builds up within a person and has to be released. It could be anxiety, or it could be anger or repressed sexual urges. The ';primitive'; more id-driven response would be to discharge this energy in a negative way. Sublimation is the redirecting of the energy into a positive outlet. So, you have an important job interview: Instead of ';wasting'; energy by stewing and fretting, you channel that energy into researching the company your trying to get a job with, so you'll be more prepared. Or, you're angry with a co-worker. Instead of lashing out and getting into trouble at work, you go for a run. There is no rule that the works done through sublimation are never seen. In fact, Freud would say that many works of art are the result of sublimated energy. Hope that makes sense.
